When a roll cracks, spalls, or wears out earlier than planned, the cost goes beyond the roll itself: unplanned stoppages, scrapped material, and a disrupted production schedule. A Pearlite ductile iron roller is built to reduce that risk. Its pearlite matrix and nodular graphite structure give the roll the toughness to survive heavy loads and the hardness to keep rolling accurately.

ZH Roll has manufactured cast iron rolls since 1992, and our pearlite ductile iron rollers are supplied to roughing, intermediate, and finishing stands in steel rolling mills.

What Makes a Pearlite Ductile Iron Roller Different

Pearlite ductile iron is a variant of ductile iron. Its microstructure is mainly composed of pearlite and nodular graphite. In our rollers, the working layer is a chilled layer containing a small amount of spherical graphite, while the roll body keeps a stable level of hardness and wear resistance. This combination is what gives the product its practical advantages in service.

Small hardness drop across the working layer. The difference in hardness within the working layer is small. As the roll wears down, the surface keeps behaving consistently, which helps keep product dimensions and surface quality stable over the whole campaign.

High tensile strength for heavy loads. Pearlite ductile iron has high tensile strength and impact toughness, so the roll stays stable under high rolling pressure and impact forces. This makes it a dependable choice for stands that see the heaviest loads.

Resistance to high temperature and accidents. The roll can work under high-temperature conditions and has good resistance to rolling accidents such as impact and sudden overload. For hot rolling lines, that means fewer unexpected roll changes.

A long service life. Good wear resistance lets the roll hold up through long rolling campaigns. Fewer changes means more production time and lower roll cost per ton of steel.

Because of these characteristics, pearlite ductile iron rollers are widely used in metal processing and are regarded as one of the important pieces of equipment in the modern steel industry. In rolling mills they plastically deform metal blanks into sheets, bars, and profiles that meet specific specifications.

Signs It May Be Time to Switch to a Pearlite Ductile Iron Roller

Not every roll problem comes from the rolling process itself. Sometimes the roll material is simply not matched to the stand. If you recognize any of the following in your mill, a Pearlite ductile iron roller deserves a closer look.

Rolls break or crack under heavy loads. Roughing and early stands take the highest rolling pressure and impact. A roll with high tensile strength and good impact toughness is better able to stay in one piece when the load spikes.

Wear is uneven and product size drifts. When the hardness changes sharply from the surface into the working layer, the roll behaves differently as it wears. The small hardness difference of a pearlite ductile iron roller helps the roll wear more evenly, so size and surface quality are easier to hold.

Accidents leave rolls scrapped early. Mills that run into sudden overloads or impact events need rolls with good resistance to accidents, because a roll that can survive one is a roll that does not have to be replaced after it.

Roll changes interrupt production too often. Each change costs rolling time. A roll that holds its surface through a long campaign helps raise output between changes.

Hot rolling temperatures are demanding. The roll must keep working stably at high temperature, which is a basic requirement of this material.

Matching the Roll to the Stand

The three grades in this category are separated by stand position. Each carries a different hardness and nickel content so the roll fits the work it has to do.

SGPI, for roughing mills:

HSD 45-55, Ni 1.5-2.0%.

High strength to take the heaviest reductions and impact.

SGPII, for intermediate mills:

HSD 55-65, Ni 2.01-2.5%.

A balance of wear resistance and toughness.

SGPIII, for finishing mills:

HSD 62-72, Ni 2.51-3.0%.

Higher hardness for accuracy and surface quality at high speed.

Choosing the grade by stand position, instead of by hardness alone, is how mills get the most from each roll.

Made to Fit Your Mill, Not Just a Catalog Number

A roll only performs well if it matches the mill it runs in. ZH Roll approaches every Pearlite ductile iron roller order as a fit problem first and a manufacturing task second.

Experience behind every grade.  That experience shows in how we choose compositions and hardness levels for roughing, intermediate, and finishing stands.

Manufacturing capacity you can plan around. With advanced manufacturing equipment and an annual production capacity exceeding 15,000 tons, we are able to support both regular supply and larger orders.

Quality checked before delivery. Comprehensive quality testing capabilities allow us to verify the properties that matter for rolling performance, so the roll that arrives is the roll that was specified.

Customized to your drawings. Roll diameter, barrel length, groove design, and hardness requirements can be built to your technical drawings and equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pearlite ductile iron roller?

It is a rolling mill roll whose matrix is pearlite, with nodular (spherical) graphite in the structure. It is made for steel rolling mills where the roll must combine high strength, wear resistance, and stability under impact.

Which rolling mills use Pearlite ductile iron rollers?

They are used in rolling equipment across the steel industry, including roughing, intermediate, and finishing mills producing sheet, bar, and profile products. The right grade depends on the stand position.

Why choose pearlite ductile iron over a harder chilled roll?

Pearlite ductile iron offers a small hardness difference across the working layer, high tensile strength, and good tolerance to impact and high temperature. These qualities help when the main concerns are roll breakage, uneven wear, or accidents during rolling.

Can these rollers be made to our drawings?

Yes. Send us your roll diameter, barrel length, groove design, and technical drawings, and our team will recommend a suitable grade and manufacturing plan.

What information do you need to quote?

Please tell us the mill type, stand position, roll dimensions, required hardness, rolling temperature, and the roll's current performance. The more detail we have, the closer the recommendation will be.
